People with Intellectual Disabilities and Health Promotion (GESUND!)

GESUND! (= HEALTH!) is a participatory project where academic researchers are doing research together with people with intellectual disabilities. The research project is focusing on health education and health promotion for people with disabilities.

In the first funding period of GESUND! we developed and implemented a health education program and realized three inclusive research projects: two smaller projects in a workshop for adapted work (sheltered workplace) and one Photovoice study in the district of Berlin-Lichtenberg, Germany. Our work now is based upon the insights gained in the first funding period.

The main objective is the development of four peer to peer health trainings. The health trainings will be developed and evaluated in the inclusive team in close cooperation with municipal stakeholders and practitioners from social agencies. Materials for the health seminars will be developed in plain language with emphasize on visualizing methods such as pictures and videos. The team members with intellectual disability will be qualified to guide the trainings themselves as co-instructors. Furthermore, we will examine the options for a structural anchoring of the training program in order to create sustainability.
