Abstract
Fundamental to participatory health research (PHR) is the highest possible level of engagement of all the participants in the research process. In 2019 practice partners and peer researchers from four subprojects in PartKommPlus formed a working group for the purpose of writing a discussion paper. The paper was intended to highlight key experiences and observations in various participatory research contexts from the perspective of nonacademic partners. The purpose was to promote further discussion of participation in practice and research and to support the further development of this form of collaboration. The paper makes clear that the research process is as important as the research results, and that the implementation of the results are largely dependent on the human and financial resources, the will of the stakeholders, and the political climate at the local level.
